Charles Bauer of Bayville Named 2016 Team Captain for Kutztown University Cross Country

2016 Aug 15

Charles Bauer of Bayville, NJ (08721) has been named a 2016 team captain for the Kutztown University cross country team.

CJ Bauer and Steve Maine will join Brian Taylor as tri-captains of the 2016 Kutztown University men's cross country team. On the women's side, 2015 captains Kimberly Katzgrau and Olivia Dettore will return to their leadership roles in 2016 as the Kutztown University women's cross country team has announced captains for the upcoming season.

For the men, Taylor, entering his redshirt-senior season, returns to captaincy for the second year in a row. He received his medical redshirt after competing in two of the first-three races in 2015 before sitting out the remainder of the season due to injury. Prior to the injury, he had a season-best 22nd place finish in the Golden Bears' season-opening title at the Dutchmen Invitational.

Bauer also had his best performance of the year as part of that title, crossing seventh with a personal-best time of 26:51. That was one of three top-20 finishes on the year for the rising senior, who narrowly missed out on a top-50 showing at the NCAA Atlantic Regional with a 52nd place finish. Bauer also performed in the classroom, earning a spot on the Dean's List en route to being named a PSAC Scholar-Athlete as well as a member of the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team.

Entering only his junior season, Maine turned in Kutztown's best national finish in more than 20 years as a sophomore at the 2015 NCAA Championships. A two-time Team MVP, he followed a freshman campaign in which he was named PSAC and KU Male Freshman of the Year by earning All-PSAC and All-Region honors for a second consecutive year. Competing in six races, he placed in the top-15 five times, including third at the Dutchmen Invitational, seventh at the NCAA Atlantic Regionals, eighth at the Division II/III Challenge, and 12th out of 354 runners with a season-best 25:11 at the Paul Short Invitational.

On the women's side, Katzgrau enters her redshirt-senior season on the heels of top-90 finishes at both of those aforementioned postseason events. She placed in the top-50 three times in 2015, including a season-best 18th place finish as part of KU's runner-up finish at the season-opening Dutchmen Invitational.

Dettore, a redshirt-junior, had four top-50 finishes last season, including a top-10 performance in the Golden Bears' second place finish at the Bulldog Invitational. She also crossed 42nd out of 168 competitors at the PSAC Championships before running a personal-best time of 22:54.4 to finish 53rd at the NCAA Atlantic Regional. Also excelling in the classroom, Dettore is a four-time Dean's List honoree, three-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete, and in February was named a member of the 2015 USTFCCCA All-Academic Team.

Kutztown will look to open 2016 the same way it did in 2015 when it heads north to Easton, Mass. for the Stonehill Invitational on Sept. 3.
