Peter Murray and Kutztown University Shine in International Model U. N. Competition

Kutztown University Model United Nations member Peter Murray of Reading, Pa., traveled to Milan, Italy, on May 19, 2014 to represent Kutztown University at the Milan International Model United Nations Conference at Bocconi University. Representatives participated in intense discussion of important international topics in several simulations. Four KU delegates won awards representing the university.

In the Council of Europe, Economic and Financial Council simulation, delegates Emily Thaler, Peter Murray, Shirin Toshkhujaeva, and Alexander Benedict discussed the delicate balance between sovereignty and innovation in the European Union, as well as the wage & employment gap for female professionals.

In the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations simulation, delegates Rana and Shodiya Toshkhujaeva discussed food security in South East Asia, the regulation of biofuels.

Delegate Ezra Kane-Salafia participated in the International Court of Justice simulation, an intensive international law focused committee, which discussed the United States' use of drones in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen and Somalia.

Delegates Peter Murray and Musfrah Shahid Rana were awarded the coveted 'Best Delegate' (first place) award in their respective committee, while Delegates Shodiya Toshkojueva and Ezra Kane-Salafia were awarded Honorable Delegate (second place). Kutztown University's delegation was among the most highly awarded at the conference.

The Kutztown University of Pennsylvania Model United Nations Club was founded in 1971 by Dr. Roger Whitcomb, professor of political science and director of the international studies program. The club gives students the opportunity for debate and cultural exchange outside the university's environment.
