Ryan Baron Honored by American Red Cross

2016 May 13

Kutztown University's Ryan Baron of Garwood, N.J., was recognized by the Tri-County American Red Cross at its annual Berks County Heroes Breakfast on Thursday morning, as the recipient of this year's Adult Good Samaritan Heroes Award. The American Red Cross Berks County Heroes Breakfast was established 12 years ago in an effort to recognize and raise public awareness of local heroes who carry out the mission of the Red Cross every day. Since 2005, the Berks County Chapter of the American Red Cross has celebrated more than 150 extraordinary individuals who have made a personal commitment to creating safer and stronger communities, all right here in Berks County. Baron, a KU football player, received the Good Samaritan Heroes Award for his heroic actions on Monday, August 24, the first day of fall classes at Kutztown University. Upon exiting the west side of Boehm Science Center that afternoon, Baron noticed a female student in medical distress on the landing. Having worked as an emergency medical technician during the summer, he took immediate action, administering emergency medical care until University Police and the local EMS team arrived. In addition, due to his knowledge as an EMT, Baron made recommendations to the university administration to enhance resources for similar incidents in the future. For his actions, Baron received the KU President's Citation earlier this year. The President's Citation was established last fall and is presented at the discretion of the Kutztown University president to a current student who has performed an exceptional act of service that directly benefits the well-being of others.
