Opening Remarks by Pa. Secretary of Education Pedro Rivera

Kutztown, PA (04/17/2017) — Kutztown University will host a Respect My Red Leadership Training on sexual misconduct for student leaders, educators, counselors, administrators, principals and coaches in K-12 and higher education, on Monday, April 17, beginning at 1 p.m. in Alumni Auditorium in the McFarland Student Unioni. Attendees can preregister at www.schoolpolicyinstitute.org. The cost is $50 for adults, $25 for students with proper school identification and $15 for Kutztown University students.

Opening remarks and workshops will be facilitated by national experts and will run from 1 p.m. - 6 p.m.

Pedro Rivera, secretary, Pa. Department of Education, will provide opening remarks at 1 p.m. in Alumni Auditorium in the McFarland Student Union. .

Katie Koestner, executive director, Campus Outreach Services, will serve as keynote speaker at 7 p.m. in Schaeffer Auditorium. Koestner's speech is free and open to the public.

Koestner was featured on the cover of Time Magazine in June, 1991, when she publically spoke out about her own rape by a fellow students at a highly-respected college in Virginia. Brushed off by school administrators and even her own father, she began a life-long crusade to bring about awareness of date rape. She is currently the director of the Take Back the Night Foundation. She will challenge audience members to confront injustice.

The conference will feature training on: Title IX Compliance and Bystander Intervention

  • For K-12 and Higher Education Administrators and Student Leaders
  • Practice response training and investigations with real actors
  • Hear victim and accused perspectives
  • Process case studies with colleagues and peer leaders
  • All attendees receive model policies, training center access and protocol templates
  • Nationally recognized attorneys, educators and experts.
