Dr. Lu to Present 2018 Chambliss Faculty Research Fall Lecture

Kutztown, PA (10/29/2018) — Kutztown University professor of mathematics, Dr. Yun Lu, will deliver the fall 2018 Chambliss Faculty Research Awards lecture at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 19, in the McFarland Student Union Building's Alumni Auditorium, Room 183. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Lu, a resident of Upper Macungie Township, Lehigh County, will present Optimization by Metaheuristics. Metaheuristics are high-level problem-independent algorithmic frameworks that provide a set of guidelines or strategies to develop heuristic optimization algorithms. They are generally recognized as efficient approaches to solve complex problems in industry and services, in areas ranging from finance to production management and engineering. Lu will provide an overview of some main metaheuristics and their principles, as well as give examples of how certain metaheuristics are used to solve combinatorial optimization problems.

In Sept. 2017, Lu was awarded the Chambliss Faculty Research Award during the university's Faculty and Staff Convocation and Celebration.

Lu has served as co-chair of the Department of Mathematics' Promotion, Evaluation and Tenure Committee Technology, as well as chair of the Online Teaching Committee and the Tenure-Track Faculty Search Committee. She is a member of various university committees including the Undergraduate Research Fund Committee, the Committee on Committees, the General Education Assessment Committee, the University Promotion Committee and the University Sabbatical Committee. She has authored and co-authored several peer-reviewed articles on the subjects of operations research, mathematics logic and mathematics education.

She holds a bachelor's degree in applied mathematics from Anhui University, Heifei, China. She earned both a master's degree in computer science and a doctorate in mathematics from Wesleyan University.

The Chambliss Award, inaugurated in 2004 through a gift from Dr. Carlson R. Chambliss, professor emeritus, is meant to recognize the very highest achievement in research and scholarship and can be awarded only once in a person's career.
