Folklife Demonstrations, Vendors and Egg Hunts Headline KU's Annual Easter on the Farm April 13
Kutztown, PA (03/18/2019) — Experience the best of Pennsylvania's Easter traditions at Easter on the Farm on Saturday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Kutztown University's Pennsylvania German Cultural Heritage Center. Admission is free and open to the public, and parking is by donation.
Local craftspeople and artisans will be on-site demonstrating traditional fiber arts, hearth cooking, paper crafts, egg scratching and more. Visitors of all ages will be immersed in farm life and springtime fun with wagon rides, farm animals and hands-on craft activities. Free Easter egg hunts for ages 12 and younger will take place at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Prizes will be given out to lucky egg hunters with sweets generously provided by R.M. Palmer, Just Born, Inc., and the Heritage Center.
Don't miss a visit to the Easter Vendor Tent, where a variety of artists and vendors will be displaying folk art, pressed flowers, hex signs, vintage prints, canned goods, hand-carved creations and more. Proudly support craftspeople representing local small businesses; they can help you find the perfect Easter gift for that special someone.
The buildings and grounds of the farm will be bustling with activity and food samples provided by the demonstrators.
Food and refreshments will be available at the Old Time Plow Boys kitchen, and chocolate eggs, pretzels and other treats can be found at Brenda's Candies. To beckon back to PA German traditions of Easter goodies, dandelion greens and bacon dressing will be available in the summer kitchen with Terry Berger, and treats will be available in the Farmhouse Kitchen.
Stop by the Farmhouse parlor and dining room to see beautiful Easter decorations, including displays of Peter Fritsch's elaborately decorated eggs, feather trees and scratched eggs.
Be sure to also visit the Freyberger School House for an exhibition on Pennsylvania Dutch powwowing and ritual traditions of Lent and Easter. While waiting for the Easter Bunny to place eggs for the hunts, children can listen to stories by local authors Mary Laub and Rachel Yoder, as well as dialect music played by Keith Brintzenhoff in the schoolhouse.
Those looking for superior craftsmanship should visit the Berks Guild of Craftsmen, who will be at the Craftsmen Log Cabin with handmade furniture, Moravian star kits, ornaments, prints and handmade wooden pens. Don't miss a moment of Easter on the Farm!
