Kutztown, PA (03/27/2017) — Kutztown University Department of Music will hold two instrumental ensemble concerts in April. The university's Symphonic Band will perform on Tuesday, April 4, at 7:30 p.m. and the Wind Ensemble will perform on Thursday, April 27. Both events are in Schaeffer Auditorium and are free and open to the public.

The Symphonic Band will perform "Music to Tell a Story," with pieces such as Havendance by David Holsinger; Each Time You Tell Their Story, a tribute to those who died in American wars by Pittsburgh composer Samuel Hazo; Festivo by Valclav Nelyhbel; American Riversongs by Pierre LaPlante; Blessed Are They from "A German Requiem" by Johannes Brahms; and Chant & Jubilo by W. Francis McBeth

The Wind Ensemble will present "Music of Recollections, Memories, & Sentimentals." The concert will include the Pennsylvania premiere of Morning Rush by J.R. Trimpe, a fast-paced composition that captures the spirit of an intense morning commute; Colonial Song from Sentimentals No. 1 by Percy Aldridge Grainger; and La Forza Del Destino Overture by Giuseppe Verdi.

The Wind Ensemble will also present Illuminations by Mark Camphouse which honors the life and legacy of Robert D. Jorgensen, professor of music emeritus and director of bands emeritus at the University of Akron, who passed away in 2015. KU Director of Bands Daniel Neuenschwander was a student of Jorgensen. KU was one of the commissioning institutions for Camphouse's piece.

The ensemble will close with Barnum & Bailey's Favorite (March) by Karl L King. This classic American circus march honoring the closing of Barnum & Bailey's circus this year.
