KU to Celebrate World Philosophy Day November 15

Kutztown, PA (10/23/2018) — Joseph H. Carens will present the eighth annual UNESCO World Philosophy Day lecture titled "Global Justice and Immigration" at Kutztown University at 5 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15, in room 145 of the Boehm Science Center. A reception will precede the lecture at 4:15 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public, and faculty teaching relevant courses are especially encouraged to bring their classes.

Carens, professor of political science at the University of Toronto and fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, has performed extensive research concerning political theory, citizenship and ethics in immigration. He holds a bachelor's degree in philosophy from the College of Holy Cross, master's degrees in political science and religious studies from Yale University, and a doctorate in political science from Yale University.

He has authored The Ethics of Immigration (Oxford University Press) and Immigrants and the Right to Stay among other works, and is considered a leading theorist of the ethics of immigration.

Carens's lecture is specifically dedicated to the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It will explore the ethical considerations that must go into shaping the policies in relation to immigrants and how these policies need to be restructured to make them humane.

The Department of Philosophy gratefully acknowledges support for this program from the President's Strategic Initiatives Program, the Office of the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the Association of Campus Events.

For more information regarding Joseph Carens' visit or if you would like to bring your class to the lecture, please email Laurel Delaney at ldelaney@kutztown.edu or call the Philosophy Department at 610- 683-4230.
