KU to Host Critical Issues Forum, Presented by Former U.S. Ambassador Michele Bond
The Kutztown University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will host the 2018 Critical Issues Forum on Wednesday, Oct. 24, in the Boehm Science Building, Room 145.
Kutztown, PA (10/10/2018) — The Kutztown University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences will host the 2018 Critical Issues Forum on Wednesday, Oct. 24, in the Boehm Science Building, Room 145. Titled, "40 Years at the State Department: Thoughts on Diplomacy, Immigration, and Public Service," the forum will be presented by Michele Thoren Bond, former assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs and U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Lesotho. A reception is scheduled for 5:30 p.m., followed by the presentation at 7 p.m.
Ambassador Bond will discuss the topic of foreign immigration to the United States, including international students, business travelers, tourists, and permanent/temporary workers. She will specifically address whether our screening process is sufficient and equitable, as well as the impacts that changes to the immigration system have on foreign talent recruitment and retention.
Professionals and leaders in the field of international relations are encouraged to attend. The event is free and open to the public. Bond will also be speaking to classes in the morning and meeting with the university's Small Business Development Center throughout the day.

Bond has served her country in numerous capacities, spanning four decades. Beginning her career with the Foreign Service in 1977, she has subsequently served as director of consular training at the Foreign Service Institute, as well as managing director of Overseas Citizens Services. After serving her appointment as ambassador from 2010-12, Bond became acting assistant secretary for Consular Affairs and was nominated by President Obama to become assistant Secretary of State.
A graduate of Wellesley College, Georgetown University and the National War College, Bond has expertise in immigration policy, inter-country adoption and public advocacy. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2015 Thomas Jefferson Award from American Citizens Abroad and the Mary A. Ryan Award for outstanding public service.
