Kutztown University Artist in Residence Program to Address Issues of Labor, Cultural Appropriation and Pennsylvania History

The Marlin and Regina Miller Gallery at Kutztown University will host artist team Justin Randolph Thompson and Bradly Dever Treadaway for its annual Artist in Residence program from Monday, Jan. 22 through Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018. Thompson and Treadaway will be creating a site-specific installation entitled "The Antenna for the Race." During this three-week residency, the artists will work with students using sculpture and multi-media to create a fully immersive environment that will address issues of labor, cultural appropriation, and Pennsylvania history.
The exhibit will be on display from Thursday, Feb. 8 through Thrusday, March 8. It is free and open to the public. The opening reception is Thursday, Feb. 8, from 4 - 6 p.m.The opening reception will also include a live performance with music students who have collaborated with Justin Thompson on an original score.
The Artist in Residence program in the Miller Gallery is in its ninth year. It provides students with the opportunity to forge a unique one on one relationship with successful working artists.
Justin Randolph Thompson and Bradly Dever Treadaway are American new media artists that have collaborated over the past 20 years through the mediums of photography, installation, video and performance. Their collaboration revolves around ideas of cultural clash, generational divide, social hierarchies, the resonance of collective and personal identity and a legacy of spiritual ascension. Thompson spends his time between the Italy and the US while Treadaway is based in Brooklyn. Accolades include a Louis Comfort Tiffany Award, a Fulbright Fellowship, a BRIC Media Arts Fellowship, and a Jerome Fellowship to Franconia Sculpture Park and the artists work can be found in the collections of the Fundacion Botin, the Brooklyn Public Library, the Mobile Museum of Art and The Center for Photography at Woodstock. Thompson and Treadaway have realized numerous residencies, exhibitions and performances at major Universities including Michigan State University, Wells College and Texas A&M University Corpus Christi.
