Kutztown University LGBTQ and Women's Center to Host Gender and Sexual Minorities Conference
Kutztown, PA (09/21/2017) — The Kutztown University LGBTQ and Women's Center will be hosting a Gender and Sexual Minorities Conference on Friday, Sept. 29, from 9 a.m. to 3:50 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room (218) of the McFarland Student Union. A keynote address will be given by Mara Keisling, a transgender rights activist and founding executive director of the National Center for Transgender Equality. The keynote speech will be at 10 a.m. followed by a Q & A at 11 a.m.
The event is free and open to the public. Registration can be done on site from 9-10 a.m. in the McFarland Student Union lobby.
Keisling is the Executive Director of the National Center for Transgender Equality, the nation's leading social justice advocacy organization winning life-saving change for transgender people.
Since founding NCTE in 2003, Keisling has led organizational and coalition efforts that have won significant advances in transgender equality, including the inclusion of gender identity in the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and the first-ever congressional hearing on transgender issues.
As one of the nation's leading voices for transgender equality, Keisling is regularly quoted in national and local print media and has appeared on major television networks, including CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News. She was part of the first all-transgender television interview on Melissa Harris-Perry's show in 2012. Ms. Magazine named Mara one of "45 Feminist Women to Follow on Twitter" in August 2017.
A proud Pennsylvania native, Mara holds a bachelor's degree from The Pennsylvania State University, State College, and did her graduate work in American Government at Harvard University.
Prior to founding NCTE, Mara worked for 25 years in social marketing and opinion research.
