Kutztown University Prepared to Celebrate Green Brothers Novelty Orchestra

Kutztown, PA (03/15/2017) — The Kutztown University Department of Music and its Center for Mallet Percussion Research will host a concert celebrating the careers of xylophone greats George Hamilton Green and his brother Joseph.  The concert takes place on Sunday, March 19, at 4:30 p.m. in the Georgian Room of Old Main.  Performing will be the Kutztown University Percussion Ensemble featuring Bob Becker and the Green’s New Novelty Orchestra featuring guest soloists David Harvey and Jon Singer.  A preconcert discussion on the Green brothers will begin at 4 p.m. in the Georgian Room.  All events are free and open to the public.

The Green brothers co-led their various ensembles in the 1920s and 1930s, which all featured the two brothers playing xylophones and other percussive instruments.  Their music was internationally known and even featured in the first three movies made by Walt Disney.

Green’s New Novelty Orchestra is an eight-piece group with a direct musical link to the past.  Lew and Mary Green perform some of the classics that were recorded by the famous Green brothers.

Allentown native Bob Becker holds bachelor and master’s degrees in music from Eastman School of Music, Rochester, NY.  He later spent four years doing post-graduate study at Wesleyan University, Middletown, Conn., where he became intensely involved with the music cultures of India, Africa and Indonesia.
