Pa. German Cultural Heritage Center to Host Annual Easter on the Farm

Kutztown, PA (03/23/2017) — The Kutztown University Pa. German Cultural Heritage Center (PaGCHC) will host its annual Easter on the Farm on Saturday, April 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the PaGCHC. The event is open to the public. Admission is free; parking by donation.

Local craftspeople and artisans will be on site demonstrating traditional egg dying and scratching, tinsmithing, hearth cooking, paper crafts, and more. Visitors of all ages will be immersed in farm life and springtime fun with wagon rides, farm animals, hands-on craft activities, and free Easter egg hunts (for ages 6 mos. to 10 yrs.) at 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Prizes will be given out to lucky egg hunters with sweets generously provided by R.M. Palmer and Just Born, Inc.

The schoolhouse will come alive with stories by local author Dori Hoch, along with artist and illustrator Ruth Williams. Music played by the Blue Mountain Band and Keith Brintzenhoff will captivate passersby with sounds of the PA Dutch. Mountain Mary will also be roaming the grounds to discuss local folklore.

More than 15 artists and vendors displaying scherenschnitte, miniature paintings, folkart, hex signs, hand carved creations, and more will display in the Easter Market. The Market also hosts Tales from the Spirit Wind which will present the history of the Lenape tribe, traditional storytelling, and artifacts, as well as Pennsylvania Dutch star embroidery demonstrations and kits available with Shirley Sacks.

The buildings and grounds of the farm will be bustling with activity and food to try, provided by our demonstrators. New this year we have a traditional meat smoking demonstration by our friends at Dundore & Heister, natural dyeing techniques, Angora rabbit spinning, and table loom weaving. Food and refreshments will be available at the Old Time Plow Boys kitchen and at the Easter Market with Gourmet' with Love. In addition, to beckon back to PA German traditions of Easter time candy, Brenda's Candies boasts a large selection of chocolate covered pretzels, brittles, and Easter chocolates with a hot pepper kick.

The Sharadin Farmhouse for will host a gallery of folk art by Gladys Lutz - the Grandma Moses of the Lehigh Valley - highlighting traditional Easter customs of the Pennsylvania Dutch.
